Best Practices for Shopping for Funny Cards Online

In most cases, it’s best to try to make people laugh with holiday, birthday, and congratulation cards. Fortunately, with the advent of the internet, it’s become easy to search for thousands of different funny cards online, each with their own unique gags and punchlines. That’s why we’ve put together this handy little guide to expertly choosing the right funny card for any occasion.

1. Inside Jokes are the Best Jokes

If you can, always try to find a card that relates to jokes that you and the recipient have together. If your friend has something that you always tease them about, a card referencing the trait will lead to big laughs (for you, at least). Obviously, this works better with some situations than others, and is going to be specific to your friends, but you should always keep it in mind when browsing cards.

2. Know Your Friends

The recipient’s interests should be the first concern of anyone shopping for funny cards online. Animal lovers are likely to enjoy the ever popular “funny pet” cards, while workplace humor will appeal to pretty much anyone if it’s specific to their job. Does your friend love puns, and if so, why are you still friends with them? In all seriousness, however, cards based on wordplay are a good generic choice if you can’t find a card specific to their interests, as pretty much anyone can get a good laugh or groan out of a bad pun. Just make sure it’s something that they’ll “get” before you make your purchase.

3. Don’t Misappropriate the Inappropriate

Crude or sexual jokes are fine in some social situations–and virtually compulsory in others–but should be carefully considered first. Even if the recipient has no problem with these types of jokes, they might feel uncomfortable laughing at them in front of their families. Also, and this should go without saying, don’t risk such a card if there’s a chance it could be taken in a harassing or otherwise demeaning way.
